Hilarity Bites Comedy Club feat. Brendon Burns, Matt Stellingwerf, and host Danny Deegan
If we were to use one word to describe Burns’ career it’d be “interesting”. This is not your everyday comic. Older, wiser, calmer - Brendon’s energy is still enticing. His turn of phrase is coarse yet oddly eloquent, whilst remaining fully accessible and intensely loveable. Never pompous and ever self-deprecating, he just somehow seems to get away with murder, and his influence is ubiquitous throughout the stand-up world.
Brendon Burns is an Australian stand-up comedian & author, who's television career began alongside Sacha Baron Cohen & Ricky Gervais as a performer on The 11 O’Clock Show (Channel 4), but he is probably best known for his fearsome live solo shows, currently tallying at eighteen, with ten albums, and six live CDs to his name.
He first appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1996 and has returned every year since (bar 1999) and in 2007 won the unofficial Oscar of Stand up - the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Perrier Award for his show 'So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now'. He released his first semi-autobiographical novel 'Fear of Hat Loss in Las Vegas' in 2010.
“The single most jaw-dropping, awkward, yet ultimately rewarding bit of stand up we have ever seen” - ★★★★★★ (An unprecedented six stars) - Time Out
“A comedians’ comedian... a perennial mischief-maker” - Chortle
“Not only has he been pushing back the boundaries of taste for years, I’m quite certain he has no idea where they are” - Jimmy Carr
Matt Stellingwerf has come an impressively long way in a short amount of time. He is the newest rising star on the UK comedy scene, having dominated the comedy stages of New Zealand for the last five years.
Highly regarded by his peers, Matt has won four NZ Comedy Guild Awards, including Best Newcomer, the much coveted Billy T Award, and been nominated for several others.
A Hamilton-born and Wanganui-raised farmer's son, Matt trained as a criminologist, he is also an award-winning bar fly, a genuinely lovely guy, and a man full of contradictions.
He expertly brings these contradictions to the stage, with his typical low-key style and confidence, finding the humour in topics as diverse as love, mental illness, sex, drugs, and a crazy interview he once conducted with a serial killer on Death Row.
“Stellingwerf’s comedy is intelligent, clever and thoroughly researched...all the while being really likeable” - Libel
“an intellectual ‘Fonze’... extremely laid back and relaxed with the audience, seamlessly having banter and keeping his cool” - Keeping Up with NZ
Danny Deegan is a comedian, writer and actor who began performing in 2003 and has since risen steadily through the ranks of some of the most prestigious comedy clubs in the UK. His tales of mischief and the characters he creates have kept audiences all over the country enthralled as he weaves in and out of the people he has met travelling. His talent and likability coupled with a confident swagger see him as one of the most popular acts in the North.
Fresh from a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe, where he received rave reviews, Danny also recently performed a headline set at the Green Man festival in South Wales getting a great reception from the 400 people in the marquee and being asked to wrap up for Manchester band Doves after their headline set in front of 12,000 people.
Outside of live work Danny has made several TV and radio appearances. From being a guest on Radio GMR to having his own show "Afternoons with Danny Deegan" on CAT FM in Crewe. His TV credits include appearances on "Made in the North" and "The Adam and Shelley Show" to name but two.

“Deegan has a mature confidence in his abilities” - Chortle
