Hilarity Bites Comedy Club feat. Roger Monkhouse, Matt Stellingwerf, and host Ben Van der Velde
A consummate stand-up who employs a deadly combination of charm and menace to exert a masterful control over any audience, Roger Monkhouse's trademark stage-prowling style and curious, inimitable manner have established him as one of the hottest names on the comedy circuit.
Roger headlines at all the major comedy venues and has performed extensively throughout the UK and internationally, playing in all corners of the globe from Europe to The Middle East, South Africa, China, Singapore, Tokyo any many places in between. A fine topical writer and performer, and master of sharp observational comedy, Roger is a regular member of the prestigious and critically acclaimed ‘Cutting Edge’ team at the London Comedy Store. His forte is delivering intelligent, thought provoking material that pulls no punches and is always incisive, relevant and up to date.
Supremely confident, with audience banter down to an art form, Roger is happy to improvise freely but has no shortage of first class material in his armoury. A master of observational comedy with routines that are universally and unfailingly hysterical.
“He's sometimes topical, sometimes punny. Sometimes clever, sometimes daft. There is, in short, something in this varied comedy menu for every taste... A gifted natural... One of the consummate professionals of the stand-up circuit” - Chortle
“...his laconic delivery shields an engaging persona and an enquiring mind” - The Guardian
“Unfailingly entertaining and skilfully able to pull punchlines, seemingly, out of thin air” - Chortle
Matt Stellingwerf has come an impressively long way in a short amount of time. He is the newest rising star on the UK comedy scene, having dominated the comedy stages of New Zealand for the last five years.
Highly regarded by his peers, Matt has won four NZ Comedy Guild Awards, including Best Newcomer, the much coveted Billy T Award, and been nominated for several others.
A Hamilton-born and Wanganui-raised farmer's son, Matt trained as a criminologist, he is also an award-winning bar fly, a genuinely lovely guy, and a man full of contradictions.
He expertly brings these contradictions to the stage, with his typical low-key style and confidence, finding the humour in topics as diverse as love, mental illness, sex, drugs, and a crazy interview he once conducted with a serial killer on Death Row.
“Stellingwerf’s comedy is intelligent, clever and thoroughly researched...all the while being really likeable” - Libel
“an intellectual ‘Fonze’... extremely laid back and relaxed with the audience, seamlessly having banter and keeping his cool” - Keeping Up with NZ
